This is an eclectic collection of Letters to the Editors of various magazines and newspapers, to companies to rectify problems, and essays to magazines and periodicals. Most of these were published, but some weren’t. I hope that you will find some entertaining, some educational, and some that make you think. And, of course, some will annoy—perhaps even offend—you. No personal offense is intended. I realize that two subjects, politics and religion, breed the most controversy, but read them with an open mind, accepting them as only my opinion, and you are of course free to disagree, and write your own book. I like to be around people who disagree with me, but listen with an open mind to my points of view—I don't learn anything from people who agree with me. A business associate and I agree on 80%, agree to disagree on 15%, and violently disagree on 5%—and that's where we grow. You will find some duplication, where I sent similar letters at different times or circumstances. If these bore you, just skip to the next story. A Table of Contents is in the back of the book.

Rob Ransone’s Letters You Would Read If I Was Famous is a thoroughly enjoyable and well-written collection of letters, essays, and musings. The book not only is entertaining, but demonstrates Ransone’s wide range of intellectual curiosity on numerous subjects. His topics include stories about his career as an engineer and test pilot, a humorous look at The Twelve Days of Christmas, biting criticisms of local politicians and national political parties, and much more. Indeed the book might better be titled, The Wit and Wisdom of Rob Ransone.

You may not agree with all of Ransone’s ideas, but you cannot deny his intellectual integrity. In the preface he writes, “I don’t learn from people who agree with me. A business associate and I agree on 80%, agree to disagree on 15%, and violently disagree on 5%--and that is where we grow.” With that assertion Ransone had me hooked.

I especially appreciated Ransone’s letter-to-the-editor decrying the description of the mass murders in Kosovo as ethnic cleansing. In fact, it was genocide. As a former Intelligence Analyst specializing in the Balkans, I know that Ransone is on the money when he calls out those who attempt to sugar coat mass murder by using the words ‘ethnic cleansing.’

On a lighter note, I smiled the whole time I read “The June Bridegroom.” His short essay is a primer for bridegrooms about what lies ahead. For example, he gives unsuspecting males pointers on how to respond to their wives when these newly married men have done something wrong, but don’t have the foggiest idea about what it was. Ransone suggests saying something like the following, “I am sorry that (not if) I offended you. I didn’t do it on purpose.” Or, “Look, I love you, and would never do anything to intentionally upset you.” Ransone obviously has a lot of experience in trying to ferret out what offensive things he has done.

I urge everyone reading this review to get a copy of Letters You Would Read If I Was Famous. You will enjoy exploring and thinking about the author’s views on a wide variety of topics … agreeing with some of his opinions… disagreeing with others … but all-in-all having a great reading experience.
